Anticipation is just One Part of a Catcher’s Role on the Field
The catcher has a few roles that he must play when on the field. The catcher will communicate with the pitcher when he is about to pitch. The catcher has to catch the ball if a player misses, and the catcher is the last line of defense when a player from another team is trying to score a home run. The catcher must be alert, must be observant, and must remain in control of the situation at all times. Since no one on the field can really tell where a ball will go in the game of baseball, players must be ready for anything that will happen.
Catchers have to be willing to accept the umpire’s call when they give it. Many times a catcher may have seen something a different way, but if they dispute it too harshly, they could be thrown out of the game. Being able to maintain a certain amount of professionalism will be needed for this position. Being able to read the field and knowing when another player will throw them the ball. This will almost always happen when the bases are loaded. Catchers will usually only have one shot at getting another player put. This means that the pressure is on them throughout the game. Catchers must be accurate and quick in order to prevent other players from reaching home plate.
Catchers will have to be able to watch for body language, instruction from the pitcher, and also watch other players and what they are doing during the game. This position requires anticipating other players and what they will do, and being able to tell exactly where a ball will land so that they can strike a player out. This can be a very rewarding position as the catcher gets to see the entire field from where he is standing. Watching players from both sides can be exhausting which is why players must exercise and eat a proper diet in order to be effective when on the field. Catchers also have to wear a head guard which will protect the face from baseballs that batters will miss. These balls are traveling to home plate at speeds of a hundred miles or more. Catchers run the risk of seriously injuring themselves while they are in their positions.
Body protection is also required when they are in their position. This can make catching fly balls and other types of balls very difficult if the player is not in good physical condition. They will have to squat during most of the game which can make it very uncomfortable. Having stamina and being able to last for an entire game is another job of the catcher. They must stay alert for anything that may occur during the game. The reflexes of a baseball player have to be excellent. It only takes a few seconds for the ball to be hit in their direction. Their mind and body have to work together to move quickly and be on target every time.
Many positions in baseball require staying alert while playing, but the catcher must be alert at all times in order to catch any ball that comes their way. This can be an exhausting position, but one that is fun nonetheless. Catchers can save a game by stopping other players from reaching the home plate. This can make a huge difference when bases are loaded or when a game is tied. Being able to get a person out could be the difference between winning and losing the game. Catchers play an integral role in the success of a team and whether or not they will win enough of these games to make it to the World Series.
